Do this to protect & heal your skin barrier - 4 easy steps

The season is changing rapidly and we all need to protect and strengthen our skin barrier against wind and cold weather.

Read more to learn what is the skin barrier, what it does for our wellness, and how to support and protect it. All the products mentioned are currently 50% OFF.

First of all, we need to understand what the skin barrier actually is. It is sometimes referred to as the “moisture barrier” or “acid mantle” and it consists of the very outermost layer of the skin: the stratum corneum, which is responsible for keeping moisture, nourishment and hydration inside the skin, and toxins outside.

Now you might wonder how you can recognise the signs of a damaged or unbalanced skin barrier. The very first sign of a damaged skin barrier is a delayed healing time in case of small wounds or infections (also rosacea and eczema), itchy skin, hyperpigmentation and dehydration.

These damages can stem from different causes. Lack of sleep, smoking and stress are the main factors, but also pollution, wind and UV radiation affect the skin barrier. Also to not underestimate: the use of harsh cleansing or exfoliating products and too frequent washing.

Follow this 4 Steps to Protect and Strengthen your skin barrier.

1. More Hydration

Restore hydration with active ingredients that help the skin repair its micro-tears. Active ingredients like ceramides and glycerin are perfect for locking in moisture.

Try Hydro Balance Water, a hydrating mist that replicates the skin’s NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor) and Hyper Moisturizing Cream, formulated with ceramides in a gel-like formula that doesn’t clog pores or cause shininess.

2. Less is more

The skin’s natural sebum serves a purpose: prevent hydration loss. By over-exfoliating or using too harsh chemicals and scrubs we risk stripping the skin of its natural protection. Likewise, using and layering too many serums, mists, creams and lotions, in an effort to provide as many active ingredients as possible, can result in clogged pores. Less is more: use less products, less quantity, less frequently to not stress the skin.

Take a look at these face scrub and chemical peel to unclog pores and reveal your skin's natural brightness: Gentle Scrub, fine pumice stone powder mixed in a creamy, softening texture, and 20D Even Complexion Serum, glycolic acid based chemical peel.

3. An extra-boost of vitamins

Protect your skin from oxidation and free-radicals by integrating more vitamins into your skincare routine.
20D Intensive Vitality Booster’s formula provides you with many essential vitamins (A, C, E, F) that not only bring your natural glow back, but they also make your skin less sensitive to environmental stressors.

4. Restore the pH level

Having a balanced pH level is key if you want to strengthen the skin barrier. The correct skin pH is 5.5, slightly acidic to prevent bacteria and fungi from affecting the skin. A lower or high pH can also cause inflammation and irritation. Usually, our pH is disrupted when we exfoliate, shave and wax.

Use After Shave Cream every morning and after shaving, exfoliating and waxing to restore a correct skin pH.
